Why Are You Trying to Catch Laylatul Qadr?
Is it because you want your worldly affairs to be granted? Or is it because you seek the mercy and forgiveness of your Lord?
For years, I saw Laylatul Qadr as something transactional. If I could just “catch” it, then all my duas—my hopes, my dreams, my wishes for this life—would be granted. And yet, after coming so close to death, I now see that Laylatul Qadr is something far deeper.
Yes, on this night, our destiny for the next year is written. But is forgiveness written for you?
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven ." Sahih al-Bukhari 2014
But what if Allah grants every single one of your dunya duas? What if He gives you the success, the wealth, the healing, the relationships you long for?
And yet… what if you are not forgiven?
This is why the Prophet ﷺ taught Aisha (RA) to say:
“Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.”
(O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me.)
How deeply do you want that forgiveness?
Is it more than the things you ask for in this world?
As you stand in these last nights, whispering your duas, ask yourself: If I could have only one thing from Laylatul Qadr, would it be forgiveness?
And if not, why?
May Allah forgive us on Laylatul Qadr Ameen.
Much Love,
